New Sustainable and Equitable Development Toolkit Available

The Center for Housing Policy has released a new guide that focuses on strategies and policies to improve overall housing affordability by reducing both housing and transportation costs. The guide features five policy sections which can each be adopted in order to assure housing is affordable to families of all incomes in areas with ample and reliable transportation options.

DC Announces Lottery for Inclusionary Zoning Program

The DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) recently issued a notice that announces registration for a lottery of affordable housing units under the Inclusionary Zoning Program shall be open from Friday, May 27 through Friday, June 10, 2011.

New Jersey Assembly Approves Affordable Housing Legislation

New Jersey’s State Assembly narrowly approved legislation that would modify the state’s affordable housing regulations by abolishing the state Council on Affordable Housing (COAH), and eliminating a 2.5 percent fee on commercial development to help pay for affordable housing.

Voters Reject Ballot Initiative to Repeal Massachusetts Affordable Housing Law

Voters in Massachusetts rejected Ballot Initiative Question 2, which sought to repeal the state’s affordable housing law known as Chapter 40B.

HUD Releases New Working Papers On Smart Growth, Land Use, Inclusionary Zoning, and Environmental Valuation

HUD’s Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R) has posted three sets of working papers “” Economic Development and Public Finance, Housing Finance, and Program Monitoring and Research “” on HUD USER’s website. These scientific and technical papers were written by PD&R staff as a means of sharing information, eliciting feedback, and sparking further discussion.

The City of San Jose (California) has approved an ordinance requiring future housing development throughout the city to include a number of units affordable to low-income households.

Senators Introduce Livable Communities Act

Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT), along with fellow Committee members Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Dan Akaka (D-HI) and Charles Schumer (D-NY), introduced legislation to help areas across the country plan and implement development projects that better integrate their community’s needs for transportation, housing, land use, and economic development.
