On July 31, Governor Charlie Baker signed the FY 2020 state budget, which includes significant increases to the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP), the Alternative Housing Voucher Program (AHVP) and Public Housing. The state budget also provides more funding for the state’s Community Preservation Trust Fund through an increase to the deeds recording fees from $20 to $50.

The Boston Housing Authority will become the first in the nation to voluntarily adopt small area fair market rents (SAFMRs). Doing so would link the value of a housing voucher to rent levels by ZIP code rather than to rent levels for the housing market overall, meaning that people with vouchers may have greater access to higher-cost neighborhoods.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced more than $26 million in new funding for housing from the Department of Neighborhood Development, the Neighborhood Housing Trust and the Community Preservation Fund. The funding will impact a total of 515 units, 459 new housing units will be created and 56 units will be preserved.
MassHousing has closed on $14 million in financing to Beacon Communities LLC for the rehabilitation and preservation of affordability at the 72-unit Camden Apartments in Boston, MA.
MassHousing provided Beacon Communities with a $5.9 million tax-exempt construction and permanent loan and an $8.1 million tax-exempt bridge loan. The MassHousing financing also generated $6.8 million in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit equity for the project.
