HUD released its 2023 Annual Homeless Assessment Report: Part 1: Point-in-Time Estimates, which estimates the number of individuals in shelters, temporary housing and in unsheltered settings through Point-in-Time (PIT) counts.
Key Facts
- More than 650,000 individuals were experiencing homelessness on a single night in January 2023, a 12 percent increase from 2022;
- The 2023 PIT count was the highest in the 16 years in which HUD has collected this data; and
- About one-third of individuals experiencing homelessness reported experiencing chronic patterns of homelessness.
