The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report that addresses the need to establish and implement a plan to expand linkages between affordable housing and transit-oriented development. The report, “Affordable Housing in Transit-Oriented Development: Key Practices Could Enhance Recent Collaboration Efforts between DOT-FTA and HUD,” provides data on how transit-oriented development affects the availability of affordable housing, how local, state, and federal agencies have worked to ensure that affordable housing is available in transit-oriented developments; and the teamwork of HUD and FTA to ensure that transportation and affordable housing objectives are integrated in transit-oriented developments. The report goes on to recommend that DOT and HUD develop a plan for implementing interagency efforts to promote affordable housing in transit-oriented developments, ensure they collect sufficient data to assess the results of these efforts, and formalize key collaboration practices.
