The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) has financed more than 2,700,000 rental homes for approximately 13,300,000 people between 1987 and 2013, according to a report from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

In conjunction with a HUD report that looks at the demographics of who has benefited from the credit, these estimates highlight the importance of the LIHTC program.

The NAHB report authors used data from the National Council of State Housing Agencies, HUD’s LIHTC database, and U.S. Census data to calculate the estimates.
