The Obama Administration announced a new solar initiative to increase access to solar energy, including low- and moderate- income communities, and expand opportunities join the solar workforce.
Among several key components, the initiative aims to install 300 megawatts of renewable energy in federally-subsidized housing. The program will reduce obstacles to installing solar, including technical assistance and clearer guidance for accessing Federal funding. This goal triples the goal set forth by the President’s Climate Action Plan, which called for the installation of 100 megawatts of renewable energy on-site at federally-subsidized housing by 2020.
Housing authorities, rural electric co-ops, power companies, and organizations in more than 20 states across the country have already committed to put in place more than 260 solar energy projects, including projects to help low- and moderate- income communities save on their energy bills and further community solar.
