The Housing Leaders Group of Greater Washington launched a $1 billion Capital Regional Housing Challenge, that encourages the D.C. region’s public and private sectors to each add $500 million in affordable housing investments above their current baseline by the end of 2020. The Challenge is not raising a fund for its own management or deployment. Instead, it will be a clearinghouse that highlights existing regional capital opportunities, created by partners in both for‐profit and nonprofit arenas, that address a spectrum of needs, neighborhoods and conditions, as well as supporting state and local trust funds and other public resources that can leverage and expand impact.
The Housing Leaders Group, founded in 2014, is co-convened by Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers, NH&RA member Enterprise Community Partners, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, the Greater Washington Community Foundation and Citi Community Development. Participating organizations also include 2030 Group, Bernstein Management Corporation, Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development, Community Development Network of Maryland, George Mason University Center for Regional Analysis, Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers, Leadership Greater Washington, Metropolitan Washington Bankers Group, Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, and United Way of the National Capital Area.
