H.J. Res 28 was passed and signed into law on Friday, Jan. 25, ending the 35-day partial government shutdown. With funding secured through Feb. 15, lawmakers in the House and Senate have agreed to go to conference to negotiate a Department of Homeland Security funding bill. Funding for the rest of the government will likely be impacted by the progress (or lack thereof) made by the conference. If lawmakers cannot come to an agreement that satisfies President Trump by then, the president has threatened to either shutter the government again or bypass Congress and declare a national emergency.
The Senators named for the conference are: Roy Blunt (R-MO), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Hoeven (R-ND), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Jon Tester (D-MT). The Representatives named for the conference are: Pete Aguilar (D-CA), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Kay Granger (R-TX), Tom Graves (R-GA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), Steven Palazzo (R-MS), David Price (D-NC) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA).
