The Senate recently rejected the White House’s rescission request on a 50-48 vote after it had passed in the House of Representatives on June 7. Due to procedural rules, Congress had until June 22 to pass the rescissions with a simple majority. The 60 votes necessary now effectively end any hopes of passage.
The effects of such rescissions could have been potentially detrimental to affordable housing and community development programs, clawing back millions of dollars from HUD, Rural Development, the CDFI Fund, and Capital Magnet Fund. The vote was along party lines, with Republican Sens. Richard Burr (NC) and Susan Collins (ME) joining democrats.
