The Massachusetts State Legislature made affordable housing a priority this past spring in the state budget. Many of those initiatives were vetoed by Governor Baker. Since then, the Massachusetts House has overridden every single veto and the senate followed through on overriding all but two of those vetoes, resulting in a total restored sum of roughly $5.87 million towards housing programs. $250,000 for the Tenancy Preservation Program and New Lease program remain in the balance, with less than two legislative weeks remaining in the year.
Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) has a chart of restored programs and detailed coverage of the legislative action. CHAPA asks all interested parties to Please contact Senate Ways and Means Chairwoman Karen Spilka to ask her to restore funding for the Tenancy Preservation Program and New Lease for Homeless Families.
