A new report from Mayor Megan Barry’s office says that Nashville’s shortage of affordable rental units is projected to rise to 30,934 by 2025 if more efforts are not taken to create new options for low-income residents. The analysis says in 2015 the city would have needed nearly 18,000 more affordable rental units to meet the demand for households earning 60 percent or below of the area’s median household income. The growing demand for affordable housing marks a stark reversal from conditions in 2000, when Nashville had a surplus of 2,000 affordable housing units for rent.
