Nearly 15,000 veterans in California will experience homelessness, but many of these can be helped through the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention (VHHP) Program.

The VHHP Program was made possible when California voters approved Proposition 41 in 2014, which authorized $6 million of previously approved general obligation bonds to be used to provide multifamily housing to low-income veterans and supportive housing for homeless and disabled veterans.

To date, $179 million has been awarded to 45 developments in two application cycles. The next Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) is estimated to be released in November.

HCD and CalVet have scheduled workshops on proposed revisions to the program guidelines in advance of the next NOFA. These workshops will allow interested parties to review the proposed changes and provide input and comments prior to their adoption.
