NH&RA Announces Finalists for
2013 Historic Rehabilitation Awards
WASHINGTON, DC, September 20 — A boutique hotel and restaurant that was once a Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery, a vacant elementary school converted to twenty-seven senior affordable apartments designated for retired teachers and school administrators, and a former furniture warehouse converted to 104 market-rate loft apartments are among the imaginative and innovative rehabilitation projects to be honored with the 2013 J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation (“Timmy Awards”).
This week, the National Housing & Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA) announced eight winners and seven finalists for this year’s “Timmy Awards”, which will be presented at a luncheon and ceremony on November 14, 2013 at the Langham Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts in conjunction with NH&RA’s Fall Developers Forum.
Selected by a multidisciplinary panel of judges, the winners and finalists were chosen from a total of thirty qualified applicants representing fifteen states including California, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
“This year’s submissions were amongst the most impressive we have seen since starting the competition in 2005. You can’t help but be impressed by the high level of creativity and vision that goes in to successfully redeveloping these historic properties,” said Thom Amdur, Executive Director of NH&RA. “This year’s finalists and winners are poster children for Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit at its very best – an economic engine that revitalizes neighborhoods, generates new jobs as well as much needed housing all while preserving the historic fabric of our towns and cities.”
The “Timmy Awards” were created to honor outstanding real estate projects that involve rehabilitation of older, historic buildings, primarily using State or Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits. Scoring is based on overall design and quality, interpretation and respect of historic elements, innovative approach to construction and use of building materials, impact on the community, sustainability and financial and market success of the project.

NH&RA created the “Timmy Awards” in 2005 in memory of Boston architect and preservation Advocate J. Timothy Anderson. Anderson was a singular figure in the historic rehabilitation business, whose legacy includes numerous Boston area projects, as well as a seminal study that helped preserve South Beach in Miami.
Available nationwide, and instrumental in revitalizing urban downtowns as well as suburbs and rural communities, the federal historic rehabilitation tax credit is a tax incentive used by developers to help finance the renovation of historic buildings of all types for continued use as offices, apartments, hotels, stores, and other purposes.
For more than 40 years National Housing & Rehabilitation Association has been providing an ongoing forum for professionals in affordable housing and historic rehabilitation to exchange information and build new business relationships.
