HUD recently released the 2011 American Housing Survey (AHS) data, summary data tables and a public use file. The AHS is the largest regular national housing sample survey in the United States and provides a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of U.S. housing units and occupants.

The 2011 AHS data features many changes from previous datasets. For instance, the 2011 data collection included 29 metropolitan surveys, which significantly increased the number of records that users are able to access when conducting national-level analyses. There is also a new weight variable, WGTMETRO, which allows users to manually tabulate metropolitan areas. In addition, the mortgage module has been revised to capture new mortgage types, there are two new topical modules on health homes and accessibility, and the AHS data also no longer includes community questions.
