The House of Representatives Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee markup session on the draft Affordable Housing and Self-Sufficiency Improvement Act of 2012 (AHSSIA) legislation on Wednesday April 18 at 10:00 am in the Rayburn Building. The Insurance Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee held a markup session in February 2012 on the same discussion draft of AHSSIA.
The legislation seeks to improve the efficiency and operations of the Section 8 Tenant-Based, Project-Based and Public Housing programs and includes several components from the Section 8 Savings Act (SESA) and the Section 8 Voucher Reform Act (SEVRA), two earlier iterations of the AHSSIA legislation. AHSSIA also expands the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program, changes the definition of extremely-low income, extends the Mark to Market program, increases tenant minimum rents from $50 to $69.45 per month adjusted annually for inflation, expands the Moving to Work (MTW) program, and modifies the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD), which HUD is currently in the process of implementing.
Following the markup by the full House Financial Services Committee, the bill would then be considered on the House floor.
