The National Housing & Rehabilitation Association has signed a letter, joined by numerous organizations, rebutting a proposal by one lawmaker to eliminate the federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program. The sign-on letter, prepared and circulated by the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC), responds to a proposal in a deficit cutting plan developed by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and unveiled recently. So far over 300 national, regional, state, and local organizations have agreed to co-sign this letter piece. We encourage our members to sign onto the letter, as well.

The LIHTC was one of a number of tax expenditures targeted for elimination in Sen. Coburn’s deficit reduction plan introduced last week. The letter warns that repealing the LIHTC would deprive millions of low-income families and seniors of a decent place to live and would eliminate thousands of jobs. In addition, the letter notes that the proposal’s discussion of reasons to eliminate the LIHTC is based on faulty reasoning, irrelevant information and inaccurate or unsupported claims.

If your organization/company is interested in co-signing please contact Coalition executive director Victoria Spielman at [email protected] or 202-585-8162. The deadline to co-sign is COB tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Once all co-signers have been added, AHTCC will be distributing copies on the Hill and to all co-signers.
