The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has made available through its Office of Policy Development and Research special sets of American Community Survey (ACS) data that are not available through standard U.S. Census Bureau products. The data provides numbers of households that fit certain combinations of HUD-specified criteria such as housing needs, HUD-defined income limits, and household type. The data, known as Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) data, are used by local governments for housing planning as part of the Consolidated Planning process and may be used by HUD in allocation formulas for distributing funds to local jurisdictions.
