U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) recently introduced legislation to help provide more affordable housing options for military service members and their families. The Military Families Affordable Homes Act of 2009 (S. 2827) would expand current policies to make more military personnel eligible to apply to live in designated affordable housing communities. Under the current policy, even the lowest-paid military personnel cannot meet the income requirements of the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program. The Act would allow thousands of military families across the country to qualify for the program to gain access to more affordable homes. A House version of the bill (H.R. 3641) was introduced in September by Rep. Glenn Nye (D-VA).
