The National Housing & Rehabilitation Association is honored to announce that Helen R. Kanovsky, the new General Counsel for the Department of Housing and Urban Development””and a former member of NH&RA””will deliver the keynote address at our Fall Developers Forum on November 2 in Boston.
Now the chief law officer of the Department and chief legal adviser to the Secretary, Ms. Kanovsky comes back to HUD with an impressive background in government-assisted housing. Her passion for addressing housing issues began during an internship for Senator Joe Biden when she walked into a Senate hearing as news clips were being shown about hurricane destruction of mobile homes. She went back to the office and told the Senator, “We need to do something about this.” For the 35 years since Ms. Kanovsky has continued to act on her passion most recently as the Chief Executive Officer of the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust. She also served a previous stint at HUD as special assistant to then Secretary Patricia Roberts Harris, with whom she also served at the Department of Health and Human Resources.
As a former member of NH&RA and attendee at our meetings, Ms. Kanovsky has a rare and perspicacious understanding of the both industry’s needs and the Department’s goals. We eagerly anticipate her viewpoint and perspective.
NH&RA’s annual Fall Forum, will take place at the Taj Hotel off the Common in Boston on November 2 and 3. The program will focus on the latest opportunities in affordable housing, historic preservation and new markets tax credits as well as efforts to pinpoint funding for green retrofitting. As a special event, the meeting will also include ceremonies to present our annual Affordable Housing Vision Awards for career achievement and J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
