Leaders of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency collectively announced a joint Partnership for Sustainable Communities to help improve access to affordable housing, create more transportation options, and lower transportation costs while also improving the energy efficiency of communities nationwide. Secretaries Shaun Donovan, Ray LaHood and Lisa Jackson of HUD, DOT and EPA respectively, recently announced the initiative at a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing. The Partnership for Sustainable Communities establishes the following six guiding principles:
- Provide more transportation choices;
- Promote equitable, affordable housing;
- Enhance economic competitiveness;
- Support existing communities;
- Coordinate policies and leverage investment; and
- Value communities and neighborhoods.
