U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan recently announced almost $1 billion in assistance for substantial improvements to the nation’s public housing stock. Funding is being provided through the Public Housing Capital Fund under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The funds are designed to improve the quality of thousands of public housing units, promote energy efficiency and create jobs. HUD will award grants to PHAs in the following four funding categories:
- Energy Efficiency ($600 million)
- Financing Stalled Projects ($200 million)
- Public Housing Transformation ($100 million)
- Housing for the Elderly/Persons with Disabilities ($95 million)
