Application Instructions

Eligible applicants include properties that have undergone a certified historic rehabilitation, have used or intend to use the federal investment tax credit for historic rehabilitation under IRC Sec. 47 and were placed in service on or after July 16, 2008. Properties that have chosen to forego historic tax credits must demonstrate that the rehabilitation is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards or other local preservation ordinance. Projects must be privately owned or be controlled by a non-government entity via an enhanced-use lease or other similar long-term lease.

Applicants will be judged in eight categories. Projects may be submitted in only one category. 2010 categories are:

  • Best Commercial/Retail/Non-Residential Project
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing LIHTCs (Small/Up to $5 million total development cost)
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing LIHTCs (Large/Over $5 million total development cost)
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing New Markets Tax Credits
  • Best Market-Rate / Mixed-Income Residential
  • Best Historic Rehabilitation Project Involving New Construction (please be sure to review the Timmy Awards FAQ question 6 before submitting your application in this category)
  • Most Advanced Financial Structure

Projects will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary panel of judges, comprised of individuals with backgrounds in architecture, real estate development, construction, public policy, historic preservation and economic development. The judging process will take several factors into consideration, including:

  • Overall design and quality of the property;
  • Interpretation and respect of historic design elements;
  • Integration of arch program with historic character
  • Innovative approach to construction and use of building materials;
  • Impact on surrounding community;
  • Financial and market success of project; and
  • Sustainability

Note: If any of the six categories does not produce a winning development, NH&RA reserves the right to name two winners in one of the other categories or, if appropriate, name a project a winner in a category different from which it was submitted.

Projects may be nominated under only one category. However, NH&RA reserves the right to re-nominate a project in a different category than the one it was originally submitted, if appropriate.
